Coming from a family of 14 children, Danie had a knack with food. He took/made notes, worked diligently and hitch-hiked after the Sunday breakfast shift with friend Ben Roode to meet the latter’s cousin – of course falling head over heels in love with Miethie. They did not have much opportunity for dating, but the Burgers Park was a favourite haunt of theirs, even clambering over the fence after hours.
